Radio link disconnected — communication between base and rover has been lost.

Applies to: R8, R10, SPS986, R12
What Does ERR005 Mean?
ERR005 on Trimble GPS receivers means the radio communication link between base and rover has dropped. Unlike ERR001 (which indicates no RTK fix could be achieved), ERR005 is specifically a radio link status — the receiver had a radio connection and it was lost, or it attempted to connect and failed completely. Without the radio link, corrections can't be received and RTK positioning is impossible.
ERR005 is the radio-specific companion to ERR001. If you see ERR005, fix the radio link first — ERR001 will clear naturally once corrections are flowing again.
Common Causes of ERR005
- Base station moved out of radio range during the work session
- Radio antenna cable disconnected or damaged on base or rover
- Base radio powered off or battery failed during the session
- Physical obstruction moved between base and rover (equipment, vehicles, terrain features)
- Radio channel interference from other radio systems operating on the same frequency
- Radio module hardware failure — less common but possible after impact or moisture exposure
How to Fix Trimble ERR005 — Step by Step
- Check base station radio antenna — confirm it's connected and pointing skyward with no new obstructions.
- Check rover radio antenna connection. On SPS986 and R10, the radio antenna connector is on the bottom of the receiver — inspect for damage.
- Confirm base station is still powered on and transmitting. Walk to the base if needed.
- Try changing the radio channel — if another radio system is interfering on your channel, moving to a different channel often resolves ERR005.
- Move rover closer to base and attempt reconnection.
- Power cycle both base and rover radios. Re-establish connection from the survey controller.
- If all above fails, test the radio module by swapping a known-good radio on the rover.
When to Send It In for Service
Persistent ERR005 after confirming all physical connections and radio settings are correct indicates a radio module hardware fault. Trimble service turnaround 5-10 business days for radio module diagnosis and replacement.
Preventing ERR005 in the Future
Use quality coax antenna cables rated for the radio frequency. Inspect antenna connectors regularly for corrosion. In long-session work, plan base placement to maintain line of sight to all rover working areas.
