Quick Answer

What does ERR001 mean on a Trimble GPS/GNSS receiver?

No RTK fix — base station corrections are not being received by the rover.

Trimble ERR001 Error: What It Means and How to Fix It

Applies to: R8, R10, SPS986, R12

What Does ERR001 Mean?

ERR001 on Trimble GPS receivers means the rover has not achieved an RTK (Real-Time Kinematic) fixed solution — the highest-accuracy positioning mode. RTK requires the rover to receive real-time correction data from a base station or network (VRS/NTRIP). ERR001 appears when those corrections aren't arriving or aren't usable.

An RTK-fixed solution gives centimeter-level accuracy. Without it, the receiver falls back to DGPS or autonomous positioning with meter-level accuracy — not suitable for construction stakeout, machine control, or survey control. ERR001 is the system telling you it can't achieve the accuracy you need.

The most common cause is a communication problem between rover and base — either the radio link is down, the base is too far away, or the corrections format doesn't match. It's rarely a hardware failure; it's almost always a configuration or range issue.

Common Causes of ERR001

  • Radio link between base and rover interrupted — physical obstruction, excessive distance, or base radio powered off
  • Base station moved or disturbed since setup — if the base moved, its corrections are invalid and the rover won't achieve a fix on bad data
  • Base-to-rover distance exceeding the practical RTK range (typically 10-20 km for radio-based RTK, depending on terrain and radio power)
  • Corrections format mismatch — base transmitting RTCM 2.3 but rover configured for RTCM 3.2, or CMR vs CMR+
  • NTRIP/network connection dropped on a network RTK setup — cell signal lost or VRS provider outage
  • Insufficient satellite count — fewer than 5 common satellites visible to both base and rover prevents RTK initialization

How to Fix Trimble ERR001 — Step by Step

  1. Check base station radio — confirm it's powered on, antenna is upright and clear of obstructions, and the radio LED shows 'transmitting'.
  2. Verify rover radio is receiving — the Trimble Access software should show a signal strength indicator. If zero, the rover radio isn't receiving from the base.
  3. Check base-to-rover distance. Move rover closer to base if possible. Beyond 15 km, RTK reliability degrades significantly with standard UHF radio.
  4. Confirm correction format matches on both base and rover. In Trimble Access, check Survey > Current Job > Base Options and compare to rover radio settings.
  5. For network RTK: check cell signal strength on the controller. Reconnect to the NTRIP caster and confirm the mount point is active.
  6. Check satellite availability — if fewer than 5 satellites are common to both base and rover (blocked by terrain, buildings, or tree canopy), RTK won't initialize. Move to a more open sky location.
  7. If rover shows 'Initializing RTK' rather than ERR001, the link is established but the fix hasn't been acquired yet — wait up to 2 minutes for initialization.
  8. Power cycle the base station and rover. Re-establish the radio link and allow 60-90 seconds for RTK initialization.

When to Send It In for Service

ERR001 is almost never a hardware service issue — it's always a configuration, range, or link problem. If you've verified all the above and still can't achieve RTK with known-working base and rover hardware, the rover's radio module may need service center testing. Trimble authorized service turnaround is 5-10 business days.

Preventing ERR001 in the Future

Set up the base on high ground with clear line of sight to the rover's working area. Use a radio antenna extension (mast) to increase radio range. Check correction format settings at the start of every new project — format mismatches are the #1 cause of preventable ERR001.
