Quick Answer

What does ERR-20 mean on a Topcon GPS/GNSS receiver?

Firmware corruption detected — the receiver's operating firmware has been damaged. The unit may be unable to start normally.

Topcon ERR-20 Error: What It Means and How to Fix It

Applies to: HiPer HR, HiPer V, HiPer II

What Does ERR-20 Mean?

ERR-20 on Topcon HiPer GPS/GNSS receivers indicates that the firmware integrity check has failed — the receiver's internal verification process has detected that the installed firmware has been corrupted, incompletely written, or has failed its checksum validation. Firmware is the embedded software that controls all receiver functions: satellite tracking, ambiguity resolution, correction processing, data logging, and user interface. When firmware is corrupted, the receiver may boot partially, refuse to start, behave erratically, or display ERR-20 during startup before any normal operations can proceed.

Firmware corruption in GNSS receivers is relatively rare but not unheard of. The most common cause is a failed firmware update — if a firmware flash operation is interrupted (by power loss, connection failure, or manual abort) partway through, the receiver can be left with a partial or inconsistent firmware image that fails integrity checks. A full, uncorrupted write that was nonetheless interrupted is enough to trigger ERR-20.

ERR-20 can also indicate problems with the receiver's internal storage hardware — flash memory that's wearing out at the cell level can cause read errors during the firmware integrity check even when the firmware was correctly written. This type of ERR-20 is a hardware failure rather than a software problem and requires service center intervention rather than a firmware re-flash.

Common Causes of ERR-20

  • Interrupted firmware update — power loss, cable disconnection, or accidental abort during a firmware flash operation left the receiver with an incomplete firmware image
  • Downloading and applying incorrect firmware — applying firmware intended for a different receiver model can corrupt the firmware partition
  • Flash memory hardware degradation — internal NAND flash memory wearing out, causing write or read errors in the firmware partition
  • Voltage spike or power fault during normal operation that corrupted the firmware partition
  • Failed OTA (over-the-air) firmware update via cellular — network interruption during the download phase resulted in an incomplete package being written

How to Fix Topcon ERR-20 — Step by Step

  1. Do not power cycle the receiver repeatedly when ERR-20 appears — this can worsen flash memory wear issues. Power on once to confirm ERR-20, then keep the receiver powered off until you're ready to attempt recovery.
  2. Connect the receiver to a PC via USB and attempt to launch the Topcon firmware update utility (available from Topcon's support portal or your dealer). Some receivers can enter a recovery mode via USB even when firmware is corrupted.
  3. In Topcon's firmware update utility, select the correct firmware version for your specific receiver model and serial number. Applying the wrong firmware will worsen the problem.
  4. Follow the recovery flash procedure in the utility — this typically involves holding a button sequence on the receiver while connecting USB to force it into bootloader/recovery mode.
  5. Allow the firmware flash to complete fully without interruption. Ensure USB connection is stable and laptop is plugged in to AC power (not running on battery) before starting.
  6. After the firmware flash completes, power cycle the receiver. If ERR-20 clears and the receiver boots normally, recovery was successful.
  7. If ERR-20 persists after a successful-appearing firmware flash, the internal flash hardware may be degraded — this requires service center diagnosis.

When to Send It In for Service

If firmware re-flash fails to resolve ERR-20, the receiver's internal flash memory or flash controller has a hardware fault. This is a service center repair — flash memory replacement requires board-level work and re-programming. Do not attempt to open the receiver. Contact Topcon service with the receiver serial number and the steps already attempted. Turnaround for flash memory repair is typically 7-14 business days.

Preventing ERR-20 in the Future

Never interrupt a firmware update — connect to AC power on the laptop, use a direct USB connection (not a hub), and leave the receiver undisturbed during the flash. Only apply firmware updates from official Topcon channels with confirmed compatibility for your specific model. Keep a record of the current firmware version so you can return to a known-good state if an update causes problems.
