Frequently Asked Questions: GPS / GNSS
How accurate is RTK GPS for construction stakeout?
RTK GPS achieves 0.5–1 in horizontal accuracy and 1–2 in vertical accuracy under good satellite and correction geometry. For most construction stakeout (rough grade, utility stakeout, road alignment), RTK is fast and accurate enough. For precise vertical work (finished grade, concrete forms, pipe invert), optical total station or laser level is preferred — RTK vertical accuracy varies with satellite geometry and atmospheric conditions.
What is the difference between RTK GPS and network RTK (NTRIP)?
RTK GPS uses a local base station you set up on a known point — the base broadcasts corrections to your rover. Network RTK (NTRIP) uses corrections from a network of permanently mounted base stations, delivered over the internet. NTRIP eliminates the need to set up and move a base station, which speeds up production work on projects that span large areas. NTRIP subscriptions typically cost $50–$150/month; verify network coverage in your work area before subscribing.
Can I use GPS for underground utility stakeout?
GPS works well for above-ground utility stakeout — marking where trenches will go, setting horizontal alignment stakes. It cannot locate underground utilities (that requires utility locating equipment). For stakeout inside structures, underground, or in areas with limited sky view (urban canyons, under tree cover), a total station is more reliable than GPS due to satellite geometry limitations.
