Applies to: GS18, GS16, GS14
What Does E01 Mean?
E01 on Leica GNSS receivers (GS18, GS16, GS14) means the RTK positioning solution has degraded from Fixed to Float or Autonomous — the receiver is no longer achieving centimeter-level accuracy. This is the Leica equivalent of Trimble ERR001 and Topcon ERR-03.
RTK degradation can happen suddenly (base radio link drops, NTRIP connection lost) or gradually (satellite geometry deteriorates as satellites set below the horizon). E01 is critical to recognize immediately — working in Float solution with E01 active produces positions that look normal on the controller but may be 0.1-0.5m off from true position.
Common Causes of E01
- Base station radio link dropped or base station powered off
- NTRIP/network RTK connection lost due to poor cellular signal
- Satellite geometry degraded below RTK initialization threshold
- Insufficient common satellites between base and rover (obstructed sky)
- Base station coordinates entered incorrectly — corrections are technically received but geometrically wrong
- RTK initialization failed and receiver fell back to float
How to Fix Leica E01 — Step by Step
- Stop staking immediately. Do not accept positions with E01 active
- Check base station — is it powered on, transmitting, not blocked?
- Check NTRIP connection if using network RTK — cellular signal strength?
- Move to a more open sky location if satellite geometry is the issue
- Allow 60-90 seconds for RTK re-initialization with a clear sky view
- Verify base station coordinates are correctly entered in the controller
- If RTK won't re-initialize with good conditions: power cycle both base and rover
When to Send It In for Service
E01 is almost always a field condition, not hardware. If RTK never initializes with confirmed-good base setup and open sky, the receiver's radio module may need service.
Preventing E01 in the Future
Monitor RTK solution status continuously during stakeout. Set up base on high ground with clear sky. Check NTRIP connection before mobilizing to field.
