Motor drive fault — horizontal or vertical servo motor has detected a failure condition.

Applies to: S3, S5, S7
What Does E003 Mean?
E003 on Trimble total stations indicates a fault in the motorized drive system — either the horizontal or vertical servo motor (or both) has detected an error. Trimble S-series total stations use servo motors for ATR tracking and for automated pointing; E003 means the servo drive circuit detected an out-of-range current draw, stall, or position feedback error.
E003 during normal operation (instrument was working and then showed the error) usually indicates something physically blocked the motion — a cable wrapped around the instrument, someone physically stopped the movement, or debris in the drive mechanism. E003 on startup typically indicates motor wear or electronics failure.
Common Causes of E003
- Instrument cable wrapped around the base, preventing free rotation
- Physical impact that bent or damaged the drive mechanism
- Motor wear on heavily-used instruments after several years of service
- Low battery causing insufficient servo drive voltage
- Cold temperature thickening drive lubricants below -15°C
- Drive circuit fault on the control board
How to Fix Trimble E003 — Step by Step
- Power off immediately. Inspect all cables — ensure no cable is restricting horizontal rotation
- Manually rotate the instrument in both axes by hand (with power off). Should feel smooth. Grinding or stiffness indicates mechanical damage
- Check battery level — motorized instruments need full charge
- If in cold conditions, warm the instrument before retrying
- Full power cycle on charged battery
- If E003 persists with smooth manual rotation and charged battery: service required
When to Send It In for Service
Motor or drive circuit service at Trimble authorized center. Turnaround 7-14 days. Cost $400-700.
Preventing E003 in the Future
Keep cable management tidy — use cable clips to prevent wrapping. Charge fully before use. Protect from impacts especially on the horizontal drive housing.
