Plumb out of range — the DG613 or DG813 is tilted beyond its self-plumbing compensation limit.

Applies to: DG613, DG813
What Does Er1 Mean?
Er1 on Spectra Precision pipe lasers (DG613, DG813) means the unit's plumb sensor has detected tilt in the plane perpendicular to the grade direction beyond the automatic compensation range. Pipe lasers must be accurately plumb in this plane to project grade correctly along the pipe invert.
Er1 on a Spectra pipe laser is nearly always a tripod setup issue. The tripod or cradle needs adjustment until the cross-level bubble is centered before the unit will operate. In the confined space of a manhole or wet well, this setup step is easy to rush — but Er1 appears every time it's skipped.
Common Causes of Er1
- Cross-level not checked or adjusted before powering on
- Tripod foot sinking into soft invert material
- Manhole floor cross-slope exceeding the compensation range
- Cradle not properly secured to the tripod head
How to Fix Spectra Precision Er1 — Step by Step
- Power off. Adjust tripod until the cross-level bubble on the cradle is centered.
- Ensure tripod feet are firmly seated on the invert.
- Power on and allow the plumb sensor to detect the corrected position.
- If Er1 clears, proceed with grade setup.
- If Er1 persists on a clearly-plumb setup, the plumb sensor needs service.
When to Send It In for Service
Plumb sensor service at Spectra authorized center. Turnaround 5-10 days. Cost $150-300.
Preventing Er1 in the Future
Check cross-level bubble before every power-on. Good cradle setup takes 60 seconds and eliminates Er1.
