Frequently Asked Questions: Layout Tools
What is the difference between a builder's level (automatic level) and a transit level?
An automatic level (builder's level) is a self-leveling optical instrument that reads horizontal elevations only — it cannot measure horizontal angles or be used for layout. A transit level can rotate and tilt on a vertical axis, enabling both elevation readings and horizontal angle measurement for layout work. For pure leveling and elevation control, an automatic level is simpler and faster. For construction layout requiring accurate turning of angles, a transit or total station is needed.
How accurate is an automatic (optical) level for construction?
Modern automatic levels achieve ±0.05 mm/m (approximately ±1/16 in per 100 ft), which is more than adequate for construction layout, form setting, and elevation benchmarking. Digital levels achieve ±0.1–0.5 mm/km, used for precise surveying benchmarks. Standard optical levels are preferred for field work due to simplicity and resistance to EMI, while digital levels are preferred for precise differential leveling.
Do I need a total station or is an optical level enough?
For elevation-only work — setting form elevations, transferring benchmarks, checking finished grade — an optical level is sufficient and faster to use than a total station. If you need to also measure distances, set out points in XY, or perform horizontal layout, a total station is required. Many crews carry both: optical levels for elevation-intensive concrete and finish work, total stations for layout and stakeout.
